Hunger Michael Grant Audio Book 12

Hunger by Michael Grant: A Review of the Audiobook

Hunger is the second book in the Gone series by Michael Grant, a dystopian young adult novel that follows the lives of a group of children and teenagers who are trapped in a mysterious dome called the FAYZ, where all the adults have disappeared and some of the kids have developed supernatural powers. The book was published in 2009 and has been adapted into an audiobook narrated by Kyle McCarley, who also voiced the first book in the series, Gone. In this article, I will review the audiobook version of Hunger and discuss its strengths and weaknesses.

The Plot

The plot of Hunger picks up three months after the events of Gone, where the kids of Perdido Beach are facing a new threat: starvation. The food supplies are running low and the crops are failing, while the animals in the FAYZ are mutating into dangerous predators. Meanwhile, the kids with powers are becoming more divided and hostile towards each other, as some of them are tempted by a dark force that lurks in an abandoned mine shaft. The leader of the town, Sam Temple, has to deal with the pressure of keeping everyone alive and safe, while his nemesis, Caine Soren, plots to overthrow him with the help of his psychotic sidekick, Drake Merwin. As the hunger grows, so does the violence and chaos in the FAYZ, leading to a climactic showdown between good and evil.

The Narration

Kyle McCarley does a commendable job of narrating Hunger, bringing to life the diverse and complex characters of the book. He manages to capture the different personalities, emotions, and accents of the large cast of characters, giving each one a distinct voice and tone. He also conveys the tension, suspense, and horror of the story, making the listener feel immersed in the FAYZ. His narration is clear, expressive, and engaging, keeping the listener hooked throughout the 19 hours and 39 minutes of the audiobook.

The Pros and Cons

The audiobook version of Hunger has several advantages over the print version. First of all, it allows the listener to enjoy the story without having to read through the 600 pages of text, which can be daunting for some readers. Secondly, it enhances the experience of the story by adding sound effects, music, and voice acting, which create a more vivid and realistic atmosphere. Thirdly, it makes it easier to follow the multiple plot lines and perspectives of the book, as the narrator helps to differentiate between them with his voice changes.

However, there are also some drawbacks to listening to Hunger as an audiobook. One of them is that it can be hard to keep track of all the characters and their names, especially since there are so many of them and some of them have similar sounding names. Another one is that it can be difficult to visualize some of the scenes and descriptions in the book, especially those involving action, violence, or gore. A third one is that it can be challenging to pause or rewind the audiobook if you miss something or want to go back to a previous part.

The Verdict

Overall, I think that Hunger by Michael Grant is a well-written and well-narrated audiobook that will appeal to fans of dystopian fiction, sci-fi, horror, and thriller genres. It is a gripping and thrilling story that explores themes such as survival, power, morality, loyalty, and friendship. It is also a dark and disturbing story that does not shy away from showing the harsh realities and consequences of living in a world without adults or rules. It is not for the faint-hearted or squeamish listeners, as it contains graphic scenes of violence, death, torture, cannibalism, and animal cruelty. However, if you are looking for an intense and captivating audiobook that will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you hungry for more (no pun intended), then Hunger by Michael Grant is definitely worth a listen.
