What is Shaheed-e-Mohobbat?

Shaheed-e-Mohobbat, which means "Martyr of Love" in English, is a movie that tells the story of Boota Singh, a Sikh ex-soldier who served in the British Army during World War II, and Zainab, a Muslim girl who he rescued from a mob during the Partition of India in 1947. The movie depicts their love story, which transcended religious and social boundaries, and their tragic fate, which was determined by the political turmoil of their time.

A brief summary of the movie

The movie begins with Boota Singh returning to his village near Jalandhar after serving in the Burma front during World War II. He is in his thirties and unmarried, as he could not find a suitable bride for himself. He saves money to buy a young bride from UP or Bihar through a trader.

One day, while working in his fields, he sees a young Muslim girl named Zainab running away from a group of angry villagers who want to kill her because of her religion. Boota Singh intervenes and saves her by giving away his life's savings to the mob. He takes her to his home and decides to send her to a refugee camp where she can go to Pakistan with other Muslims.

However, Zainab refuses to leave him and asks him to marry her. She is touched by his kindness and simplicity, and feels safe with him. Boota Singh agrees and marries her according to Sikh rites. They live happily together for some time, until Zainab's relatives from Pakistan come looking for her. They persuade her to go with them, promising that they will find a good match for her there.

Boota Singh is heartbroken and tries to forget her, but he cannot. He decides to go to Pakistan and find her. He crosses the border illegally and reaches Lahore, where he learns that Zainab has been married off to another man against her will. He goes to her house and confronts her husband, who beats him up and throws him out.

Boota Singh does not give up and starts living on the streets near Zainab's house. He writes letters to her, hoping that she will read them and come back to him. He also tries to meet her whenever he can, but he is always chased away by her husband and his relatives.

Zainab is unhappy and miserable in her marriage. She still loves Boota Singh and misses him terribly. She reads his letters secretly and cries for him. She also tries to see him whenever he can, but she is always stopped by her husband and his relatives.

One day, Boota Singh manages to sneak into Zainab's house and meet her. They embrace each other and express their love. They decide to run away together and go back to India. However, they are caught by Zainab's husband and his relatives, who beat them up and drag them to the police station.

At the police station, Boota Singh and Zainab are accused of adultery and treason. They are sentenced to death by hanging. They are taken to the gallows, where they declare their love for each other and die in each other's arms.
